Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 VS Tecno Phantom Pad N9

on . Posted in Mobile

As Promised, here's the review of the Tecno Pad N9 VS Samsung Galaxy Tab. Of course, some people say there are no grounds for comparison, while many more say there are. I believe and know these two devices are worthy of comparison because

  1. They have the same target market
  2. They have similar specifications

What greatly differs is the perception of these two devices by the targeted audience. With her market strategy of making similar or better devices at much lower prices (in some cases, less than half the price), Tecno has succeeded in shaking firmly the perception of Samsung as the leading android device manufacturer, and this is the most prominent example so far.

Price - Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

Price - Tecno Pad N9

Having the above specifications at hand to compare, let’s take them one by one in detail and see what’s up.

Features: Many of the features show higher specifications in the Tecno Pad. However, Samsung already has a reputation as an Android heavyweight, Tecno is just building one. The Tecno pad has a slightly larger screen with a higher resolution. Some people say the TFT screen’s technology is inferior to the LCD screen, but TFT is actually a sub-type of LCD display. Tecno Pad also has a higher screen resolution, and I expect nothing less, due to its bigger size. One up for Tecno Pad there.

The Tecno Pad’s CU is clocked higher @ 1.2 GHz. What remains to be seen if it will be continually up to the multitasking capabilities of the Jelly Bean OS. Samsung’s processor already has the advantage of first impact, it holds up quite well to multi-tasking without any serious lapses. Also, the Tecno Pad’s specs simply say its GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is embedded, whatever that means. The bone of contention here is: does it in fact have a GPU? I think we should call this a draw.

Dimension: Here, Tecno beats the Galaxy tab by a fraction- it is thinner by 6mm. Of course, it is wider and longer; after all, it does have an 8.0 inch screen

Memory: The Galaxy Tab and the Pad both boast 1 GB RAM. User memory is variable on the Samsung Tab @ 8Gb, 16GB and 32 GB. Both are expandable up to 32 GB via microSD, so the Samsung Tab can actually sport more memory. One up for the Galaxy Tab.

Camera: Tecno Pad’s 5.0 primary camera and 2.0 secondary camera versus the Tab’s 3.15 MP primary and VGA secondary cameras...it’s pretty easy maths. It beats me why the Galaxy Tab should have such a shoddy camera (yes, it is shoddy), it’s one of the reasons I have never been comfortable with it. If you will make the effort to lug around a 7 inch device, it should at least have a good camera, if nothing else. One up for the Tecno Pad.

Battery: The Tecno has a bigger capacity battery, by 500 mAh. That was not a chance occurrence. Tecno set out to consistently overshadow the Galaxy Tab in raw specs, and we hope, in performance. Again, whether this spec-stunt will meet up to the Galaxy Tab’s proven reliability is yet to be seen. I hope it does. For the sake of figures, Tecno Pad wins this.

Other Features: The Galaxy Tab still supports far more a media formats than the Tecno Pad. Tecno knows the unsupported media formats can still be enjoyed using lots of free available apps, hence the skipping of manufacturer-installed software for those media. CHEAP! Galaxy Tab wins this. However, I am beginning to suspect this won’t make much of a difference in the overall review. Why? Pretty obvious reason....below:

Price: Here’s the main thrust of Tecno’s market strategy. In an environment where devices are tied to carrier plans, consumers can get the devices a lot cheaper, from free to a fraction of the price of an unlocked device, for a 2-year carrier plan. Not so in Nigeria. You must shell out the full cost of Android or iOS indulgence, as the case may be. This is the cause of the proliferation of ‘UK used’ and ‘US used’ phones in our domain today. So, when a manufacturer offers a device with the same specifications as the Samsung Galaxy Pad at N35,000 - a little over $230 – the market is bound to notice, and NOTICE we did!

While pro-Samsung users sing about Samsung’s tech savvy and innovation, the majority are considering the Tecno Pad for more down-to-earth reasons: affordability, availability, aesthetics and desirability -in looks, the Tecno Pad beats the Galaxy Tab hands down, another UP for Tecno- and the majority always carries the vote. The majority is not trying to get the fastest device or the device with the highest memory capacity, a device with above average functionality satisfies the majority, and the Tecno Pad offers EVEN MORE than above average functionality, at a BELOW AVERAGE price.

I say the Tecno Pad wins. What say ye?

yes, it is in the difference in price that Tecno has found the most advantage, and it has turned out to be a very market-wise move. I dont know if Tecno has a slogan, but i'll find out :-)

Like I always say, you can make an informed choice after assimilating the information provided here. If you need a Tablet you can go for the Tecno Pad N(. even tho its a tab it also has phone and text messaging functions, but it would be clumsy for you to hold an 8 inch Tab to your ear to receive every call that comes in. That means it is not advisable to use it as your primary phone except you have a bluetooth earpiece to receive calls on it. If you want to browse, edit documents and watch video on a very wide screen then the Phantom Pad N9 is a very good option.
The Phantom A is essentially a phablet - phone + tablet. It you want something that can perform the functions of phone and tablet and at the same time is portable , then the Phantom A is your best bet.

Power bank is a portable device that can charge yr phone/tablet when you need power and there's no power source available. Its just like taking an extra battery except that d powerbank can charge many different devices while an extra battery will only work for ots own particular device. Powerbanks come with micro usb cable to charge any device with micro usb port e.g blackberry, all android phones, different tabs, etc. Some of them also come with different power cables that can be used to charge iphones and ipads. All you have to do is plug in your powerbank to fill it up, then take it with your on and use it to recharge your battery anywhere - in the car, on the plane, in the bus, wherever. Tecno Phantoms
A & A+ usually come with a powerbank. You can also buy different types and phone outlets near you.

Yes its very possible but dont sell your Bb yet. The BBM for Android application took off on and September but was put on hold again because Blackberry's servers could not handle the traffic from the application-too many users. Blackberry is currently expanding their server capacity to handle BBM for Android, so I suggest you hold on for a while until well after the release date, when the application might have been working properly with seamless connectivity, before you dispose your BB.

Yes, you can use the power bank for both tabs, but you need to check that the output of your power bank is sufficient to charge your tab before purchasing the powerbank. To do this, check the output specificaions on the powerbank and see that they correspond to the input specifications of the tab.

Go to www.gsmarena.com and click on samsung products, then click on galaxy tab 3.7.0 and read the previews, you will be surprised at the number of complaints from users topmost of which is "hanging screen". Not much difference in features anyway, both have 1GB ram & 1.2GHZ CPU

Sorry for the late reply. A+ is the most recent device. If you meant to ask whether you can surf the net on them like you would on a laptop, the answer is yes.

I want to get one today but my colleague in the office is saying I shouldn't get an N9. when I asked y she didn't give me a reason and all she said was I should go for Samsung. so I was wondering that maybe she doesn't want me to get same cause she has but with all the difference you listed between them, am so going for it BUT I don't want to get complain like 10G instead of 16G and no Memory card too. so how do I go about it? Am in Lagos

Go online and search for the nearest accredited Tecno dealer to u, or go to carlcare to get the address of such dealers. Their products should be reliable.

The Techno tab looks so down to earth and for the normal Nigerian with a normal pocket. But, I want to ask, which of them is good for the long run, which will last longer?
